Household Technology

Smart-Home-Tech

There is a growing popularity of air purifiers with Wi-Fi capabilities among consumers. This can be ascertained to the extra level of convenience provided when using a smartphone to control the various functions of an air purifier and also view the properties of air.

The quality of indoor air can be often significantly worse than outdoor air quality. This is attributed to the fact that the outdoors environment is continuously being purified by plants, the wind and the sun’s UV rays. On the other hand, the indoors environment remains stationary and polluted especially in spaces that are well insulated and less ventilated.

The air inside an enclosed environment may contain various allergens and contaminants. An air purifier, as a household nology, is designed to filter out the toxicity in the air reducing the risks to your health and well-being. The Wi-Fi capability allows for automatic control of the device and checking for filters replacement.

Another household technology is Vacuum sealers. These devices use manual or automatic operations to extract air from packaged food prior to sealing. Vacuum sealing slows down the deterioration process caused by aerobic bacterial growth, thus extends the shelf life of food items.

Vacuum sealer can also be used for several cooking applications such as flash pickling and sous vide. There are three main types of vacuum sealers: handheld valve sealers, external vacuum sealers, and chamber vacuum sealers.

The Handheld vacuum sealer sucks out air through a valve on special zip-top bags. The external vacuum sealer uses vacuum pump to suck out air directly out of the opening of a bag with its lip placed into a narrow chamber over the seal bar. The chamber vacuum sealer also uses vacuum pump to suck the air out of the chamber that houses a bag with its lip positioned over the seal bar.

Another household technology is the Cooling fan, which is often used as an alternative to an air conditioner in terms of costs, space and energy efficiency. These circulating fans include ceiling fans, floor fans, table fans, and fans mounted to poles or walls. Even in the presence of natural ventilation or air conditioning, the wind chill effect they create can improve the thermal comfort of a house.

When purchasing a cooling fan, you need to take into consideration its portability, sturdiness, the size of the room it will be used and the quietness of operation. Ceiling fans are considered to be the most effective cooling fans as they are able to circulate the air in a room to create a draft throughout the room. Window fans are the second option and are best used in windows facing away from the prevailing wind and exhausting hot air from your home.

How to Choose A Space Heater?

home heaters

A space heater is a convenient way to quickly raise your room temperature and add warmth to any space or room. They come in a variety of sizes and styles all with their own unique design features.
When choosing what space heater to buy, there are two main questions that come into mind, “will it effectively heat my room or space?” and “how much will it cost to run?”. The cost and heating capacity take precedence over the bonus features that are included in most of these units.

The following factors are to be considered when choosing which space heater is best to heat up your space or room: heater type, heating capacity, energy efficiency, safety features, and noise level. These factors will determine the space heater that is suitable for your heating needs.

There are basically three heating technologies under which every space heater fall; radiant, convective, and micathermic. Convection heaters typically provide even, whole-room heating; radiant heaters deliver quick, spot heating in small spaces; and micathermic heaters offer fast, widespread heat while saving space.

The size of space that the heater will cover is an essential part when choosing a personal heater. The heating capacity can be determined by the appliance’s wattage rating. The general rule of thumb is that heaters uses 10 watts of power to heat 1 sq. foot of space. However, this rule does not apply for all models due the heating technology, the nature of the indoor environment, and the working application.

The energy efficiency of a space heater is considered by users who are more concerned about conserving energy and maintaining low heating costs. Most space heaters lack a standard level of efficiency like those on AC systems. The unit can be coupled with special features such as adjustable thermostats, energy saving modes, and programmable timers to cut on utility bills and save money.

Space heaters can become sources of fire hazards if not properly monitored during use. Most heaters are designed to run cool to the touch surfaces with tip over cut-off switches that shut off the power if the heater is accidentally knocked over. The level of noise produced by these units during operation may vary from low to high pitched sound. This factor of consideration should be used to determine whether the appliance can be used in quiet rooms such as bedrooms and offices.
With the two key factors, the heating capacity and the running cost, and the heater’s operating design features in mind, it is now easy to choose the best space heater for your specific requirements.

Benefits of Hydronic Baseboard Heaters

Baseboard Heater

Hydronic baseboard heaters offer a solution to people who do not wish to install a full central heating system in their homes and also those who own small apartments. They come into the market as space heaters that are user-friendly, safe on cost and effective at heating up fixed spaces.

Hydronic baseboard heaters are useful where additional heat is required in a home or to supplement heat to a room where the temporary heat would increase the thermal comfort. There are two main types of baseboard heaters: hydronic baseboard heaters and electric baseboard heaters. The hydronic heaters use water while the electric heaters use convection to circulate air warmed by the electrically heated metal fins.

Hydronic units have been designed for use with heating systems that utilize forced hot water or radiators. A hydronic baseboard heater can offer the user a number of benefits but the best way to gain these benefits is by hiring a professional to install the unit in your home.

There are two types of hydronic baseboard heaters; a self-contained baseboard radiator that does not have to be connected to your boiler, and the other one that is to be connected to your boiler. Both of these units use hot fluid, mostly water, to warm up enclosed spaces.

For the model that is connected to the boiler, hot water is circulated into its inner pipe and heat is released through the baseboard radiators. The water becomes cools when it exits the radiator and returns to the boiler for re-heating to be used in the next cycle.

A self-contained baseboard radiator uses a special fluid that is not circulated in and out; instead, the fluid is held inside the narrow metal tube in the radiator and electrically heated whenever the baseboards thermostat is triggered.
It is important to note that hydronic baseboard heaters are great for allergy sufferers because it uses a radiant heating system. With this type of system, you do not have to worry about swirling dust and pet dander, which is common with the forced type of system.

Another benefit is that hydronic baseboard heaters are quiet in operation, since they do not blow the heat. These units are virtually soundless in operation; therefore, the user does not have to worry about the unit producing noise or disrupting the peace in an indoor environment.

Hydronic baseboard heaters save space in homes. They can be sized in varying lengths without sacrificing a lot of space in the house. Furthermore, these units do not have the bulk that come with larger radiators.
Lastly, Hydronic baseboard heaters are easy to install and have a low surface temperature running cool to the touch. These baseboard heaters are able to generate residual warmth even after they are switched off thus saving on energy and lowering utility bills.

Choosing A Ceiling Fan for Home

indoor ceiling fans

Despite their concentration in some area on the blue planet, heat waves are starting to become standard almost in any part of the country. This is not a pleasant info for modest families who haven’t a very deep pocket to purchase an air conditioner all day long. And even if you don’t belong to this category, sometimes, like in early summer, the weather isn’t hot enough to run an AC. What you can do in this situation is to get a ceiling fan in order to set a cool mood in your interior.

Many Ceiling Fans Types

Circulating the air in your home is the main objective for which ceiling fans were created to meet back in the time when the idea came out. But as time goes by, this simple purpose became a standard along with which style has become a must, especially today where a small misfitting item in a living room could disturb many interior design lovers, let a alone something as big as a ceiling fan. This is the reason why the best ceiling fans aren’t just an air circulation appliance, but also a nice looking object of decoration that you can find in many styles and shapes.

Directional

As its name suggests, this type of ceiling fans, ventilates the air by directing the air flow to a designated area of the room. One of the best scenarios in which you can profit from the directional ceiling fan is when the place you sit it in is designated like in an office where sitting seats are fixed.

Hanging Propeller

In contrast to the directional ceiling fans, which can only ventilate the space towards which it is directed, the hanging propeller ones can ventilate your entire room. This type of fans looks like the propeller of a fan. Like many modern ceiling fans style, these ones are hung by a pole attached to the ceiling.

Rotational

If you combine the directional and hanging propeller ceiling fan you can come up with the rotational one. This type of fans have multiple sets of spinning blades which rotate in opposite direction to each other. They have a central pole attached to the ceiling from which they stem. It is recommended to use them in outdoor spaces.

What’s the difference between Indoor and Outdoor Ceiling Fans ?

As it clear by their names, each of these fans serve a specific purpose and one can’t always be used instead of the other. As a consequence, picking the right one for you depends on where you want it to be placed.

Outdoor Ceiling Fans

There are two types of outdoor ceiling fans : wet-rated and damp-rated ceiling fans. You can guess it from their name, each of these fans are designed for different environments.
The wet-rated outdoor ceiling fans are designed to withstand harsh winter conditions and are sealed and protected by special materials.
Damp-rated fans’ motors on the other hand are usually made with special protective materials against corrosion. The same goes for their interior wiring that should also be protected in order to keep the fan intact in humid environments.

Indoor Ceiling Fans

Unlike outdoor ceiling fans, the indoor ones doesn’t have the same categorization as indoor environment is usually the same in part of the world. The main differences are in style. You find modern, classic, contemporary, rustic, fancy, children and other styles of indoor ceiling fans. It’s however important to measure how high your ceiling is before deciding on which size of ceiling fan fits more your room.

I hope this little guide helped clarify some important points to take into consideration before buying your ceiling fan.

Pros and Cons of Having a Tankless Water Heater

panasonic_aquarea_mainpage

In the era of compact, tankless water heaters are another testimony of the evergrowing success of minimalist technology These heaters work differently than the standard large (unnecessary) hot water volumes. They operate by heating cold water in a very short amount of time as it passes through. This is why they called them On-Demand Water Heaters.

Advantages

One of the major advantages of this type of water heaters is their size. These units are compact and won’t require much space to be installed as opposed to the conventional tank design. According to EnergyDepot, this type of water heaters can almost eliminate standby losses, a term used to refer to lost energy when unused hot water cools down. The immediate production of hot water allows these units, when used, to waste less water. You may have deduced the fact that you don’t have to let the water run while you’re waiting for hot water to reach the tap next to you. Another cool thing about tankless on-demand water heaters is their longer expected lifespan as it’s, normally, 20 years which is 5, and sometimes 10 longer than that of tank type water heaters.

Disadvantages

Like all human-created things, tankless water heaters also have drawbacks. One of the most important negative points to notes is that inability of these units to supply enough hot water when using two devices simultaneously like for example for laundry and shower. Some brands have better water heaters than others, so this issue is relative. Another con is to keep a nice constant temperature at different flow rates, you will need to equip the unit, if it doesn’t come with it, with a modulating temperature control. This is important as you don’t want the temperature to increase and decrease uncomfortably. This is more frequent when the pressure changes in various parts of your home. Also, the on-demand feature of tankless water heaters makes of them a unit that requires a relatively high electric power to heat water fast. Another point, which is not really a drawback but I wanted to include it here, is that in case you will quire tankless gas water heaters, it will require to be vented to the outdoors. You have two choices when it comes to venting, either you use a conventional exhaust flue or a direct vent. Finally, check if the gas-powered unit has a pilot light that could waste energy.

I hope this post helped you answer a lot of questions about thankless water heaters. So don’t forget to read a review about the heater your about to purchase.

Humidity Issues And Solution

Since many homes suffer from humidity, I decided to tackle this issue and share some info on it. it’s true that not all people are sensitive to moisture and molds, but in the positive case, it could lead to serious health issues. Throat irritation, nasal stuffiness, eye irritation are some of these problems. In case the person has mold allergy the reaction could be even worse. This is why this issue should be taken seriously.

WHERE DOES THE HUMIDITY COME FROM IN A HOUSE ?

Air indoors become highly humid as a result of many factors.
I Western ares, moisture is most felt in winter days when weather is cold and damp. This happens because humidity indoor comes from the confrontation of water vapor coming from the house and cold coming from outside that infiltrates a poorly insulated interior.
Indeed, our daily activities generate moisture: dishes, showers, baths, drying clothes, cooking, the simple fact of breathing also generates moisture.

These everyday activities and the moisture they generate will not be a problem if the site is properly heated and insulated, however, if not, moisture will concentrate and condense in the coldest parts of the house. Consequently, moisture is often found on thin walls exposed to outside air, near windows or in an unheated room. Moisture can also be felt and noticed in a non-homogeneously heated room where the air can not circulate. Similarly, a closet that is stuck to a cold wall will very likerly cause your clothes to suffer.

HOW IS MOISTURE MANIFESTED AND HOW BAD IS IT?

The humidity in the air is not a totally bad things as it’s part of nature that has a role, it is even desirable because otherwise the air would be too dry. However it is important that it does not exceed a certain level. For us as humans, the most comfortable relative humidity is between 45% and 65% of water vapor in the air.

moisture

Generally, we known that an interior is too wet when notice that small droplets of water have appeared on the glass of a our windows. These droplets of water are the result of condensation. This doesn’t become a problem until this phenomenon of condensation begin to give rise to mold. The effects of mold are particularly unpleasant in an interior

– Damaged parquet flooring
– Damaged paint
– Peeling wallpaper
– Dark grayish spots on the walls
– Bad odors
– white powdery mold on clothes

A Popular Solution

As you’ve seen, having humidity problems home could be very annoying and most importantly can result in serious health issues. Aquring a dehumidifier is one of the great solutions to cope with this whether it’s for your kitchen, basement or any area of your home where humidity levels are high. It’s especially important to get a dehumidifier in case your furniture and other items are getting damaged.

One of the best units out there and which has received many positive reviews is Frigidaire Dehumidifer. There are three sizes from which you can choose depending on the size of the room you will put it in. Check this review to help you out pick the suitable one.

Home Health Improvement Devices

When one member of the family is an allergy sufferer, it’s the beginning of a story that could develop until it ends by trying all sort of medicines and devices. This is a big field of research for both scientists and engineers that together collaborate to come up with new solutions. From Ventolin to air purifiers, all sort of devices are created and developed.

Technology, Design and Health

“Give me something easy, not painful, looks nice, not expensive and which will improve our health as soon as possible”. This is how I see what people hope for today. There are many disciplines, as this subheading suggests, involved in the process of creating a health improvement device and which are Technology, Design and Health.

germguardian air purifier

Technology

To come with the faster processing device, technology is high priority for companies as it’s the main pillar on which they could praise the merit of their products. The company Guardian Technologies for examples have implemented various technologies in its GermGuardian air purifiers. HEPA Filters, UV-C Technology and Charcoal Filter are all technologies which are used to market their air cleaning systems.

Design

Design is an essential component today because of it’s different benefits. Design is ergonomy. A nicely designed device will fulfill the task it’s designed for in the easiest way possible. Design is decoration. A dehumidifier for exam

ple is a device meant to lower moisture level inside homes, but if it shouldn’t compromise the interior design. Design is also used to give a feeling of sturdiness while using only plastic, so buyers should pay attention to this fact.

Health

This is in reality the most important aspect of these devices. Because air purifiers, dehumidifiers and humidifiers are all meant to serve a health purpose, failing in this mission would nullify the value of technology and design. Many customers are aware of this aspect and are looking for review all around the internet before purchasing any home improvement unit so that they could base the quality and efficiency of these devices on the experiences of owners.

Ozeri Brezza Desktop Fan Review | Keeping Cool in the Summer Heat !

Ozeri Brezza Oscillating High Velocity Desk Fan review

Summer is almost upon us and in Southern California we’ve already had many spring days that felt more like summer with temperatures reaching the upper eighties.

Ozeri Brezza Oscillating High Velocity Desk Fan review

Our house is energy efficient with dual paned windows and a house fan to keep air circulating. We also have shutters that really help with temperature control. It usually has to be in the upper 90’s, low 100’s before we have to use our air conditioning. It can get a little uncomfortable though so we like to use portable fans in each room to stay cool, especially at night.

My daughter didn’t have much space in her room for a full sized floor fan so I went with this Ozeri Brezza for her because I could set it on her dresser without taking up much space. It’s all ready to go and set up with no assembly required. Just plug it in.

Ozeri Brezza Oscillating High Velocity Desk Fan review

We like to have “white noise” in all our rooms at night to drown out the sound of barking dogs, house noises and kids waking up at all hours. This fan is definitely the loudest in the house. It’s not quiet at all, even on the lowest setting. I have to keep it there for my daughter so it doesn’t make TOO much noise.

It’s a very simple basic fan with one knob to turn to the different settings and push for oscillation. My daughter prefers not to have it moving so we just keep it on number one without oscillation but it’s nice to have the option. When we had our carpet cleaned I had it on the highest speed and oscillating to speed up drying. This setting is extremely loud.

The Ozeri Brezza is great for what we need and a nice basic fan. It’s a bit loud if you care about that but otherwise a solid little fan.

For other amazing fans, check TheTechyHome. You’ll find reviews on different types of fans.

The Grass Isn’t Greener On The Other Side! Green, Eco- Friendly Improvements For Your Home

Something that buyers are looking for more and more are properties that are eco-friendly. This is a trend that’s set to continue and become an increasingly important feature. Making your home greener means it’s kinder to the environment which is great, and on the plus side it makes your property more desirable and valuable. This is always useful, whether you plan on selling it or not. Here are some of the ways you can

Good Quality Windows

Double or even triple glazed windows will make your home much more energy efficient. Every time you put the heating on, it’s not simply escaping. Since power companies burn fossil fuels, every time you waste heat it means these fossil fuels are damaging the environment for no good reason. It also means that you’re paying over the odds on your fuel bills too. If your windows are due for an upgrade, go with the most energy efficient versions you can find. Triple glazing is something to consider, although it’s costly to fit it will save money on energy in the long run. If you don’t have the funds available to make such a large purchase, a home equity loan could be an option. This allows you to use some of the value in your home to borrow money- and can be worth it since this is then being invested back into the property.

Eco Friendly Improvements For Your Home

Loft and Wall Insulation

As with the windows, if every time you heat your home, it’s escaping through the walls and loft it’s bad for both your wallet and the environment. There are many government schemes offering free loft insulation, do some research and see if you qualify. If not, paying a company to come out and do it is your best bet. Insulation will be added to your loft to prevent heat escaping through the roof. Cavity wall insulation involves filling the gap between the internal and external walls with an insulating material.

Solar Panels

Another way to make your home kinder to the environment, reduce your bills and use less power generated by fossil fuels is to have solar panels installed. Solar power is completely renewable meaning they’re a green option. In the last couple of years, a record-breaking number solar panels were installed each day around the world making the fastest growing electricity source. You can get on board and do your bit simply by having some panels installed on your roof, and it’s something that all homeowners can do. Again in some areas you might be entitled to free or reduced solar panels due to government incentives so find out what’s available to you. Solar panels are

Water Well

Just like gas and electricity companies, water companies burn fossil fuels which are bad for the environment. Sanitising water and making it safe to drink requires using a lot of power. You can avoid this and do your bit for the environment, as well as make you home more eco-friendly by having your own water well installed in your garden. Water from a private well is safe to drink, as it will not have been contaminated with any surface water. On the plus side, it also doesn’t contain fluoride and other chemicals that are added to mains water meaning it’s a healthier option. You’ll need to have the water quality assessed every year to check that everything is ok but aside from that it’s completely hassle free. It means you don’t have to worry about things like hosepipe bans since your water isn’t coming from the mains supply.

Eco-Friendly Renovations

If you’re thinking of renovating your home, there are a number of ways you can be kinder to the environment. First is to use recycled materials. Look online to see if anyone is getting rid of anything in your local area, not only is this more eco-friendly than buying new but it will also save you some money as well. Secondly, recycle any materials you no longer need. If you’re knocking down walls, for example, someone else might be able to make use of the bricks for hardcore or filling in a hole in their garden. Using environmentally friendly paints, those with low VOC levels is another thing you could consider. These don’t release volatile chemicals that damage the environment and ozone layer, so is another small way to do your bit. The more people choose these kinds of products; the more demand is created for them. So opting for the environmentally friendly versions of things is better long term too.

ActionFly LED Night Light Review | Smart Night Light With Sensor

My family does  a lot of camping in the desert with no hookups so that means at night when the generator is off, it’s pitch dark. One problem I’ve continually encountered on these trips is literally tripping over things in the middle of the night when I get up to use the bathroom or help one of my kids with something.

The light switches are tricky in the trailer and I hate fumbling around in the dark waking others up. A night light with sensor was exactly what I needed.

This night light can be switched off and on OR put on auto mode so that it turns on when it senses motion. It seems to have a good level of sensitivity and doesn’t just randomly go on by itself like some do. It’s only gone on when I’ve actually moved by it.

It comes with a little two sided mounting tape that is sufficient to stick it where ever you need it. I’m keeping mine in my trailer on the door outside of the bathroom so as soon as I get near it, the way will be lit for me! It can be placed anywhere you need it though and since it’s battery operated the options are endless as you aren’t limited to outlet location.

Since it only stays lit when you are in the range of ten feet of it, you don’t have to worry about the battery being wasted since it shuts itself off after fifteen seconds. This is especially helpful at night when I just need it for a minute and don’t want to have to fumble around to switch it off and on.

While I prefer a plug in night light for my house to save batteries, the ActionFly LED Night Light is ideal for our trailer!
